Following on from a previous post about building risk into playgrounds I see a new formal inquiry into "lost childhood" has been announced.

Ultimately it is down to parents to ensure that their children have the right childhood, but it is interesting to see the article refer to the "red tape" on childhood.  This seems to refer to the regulation surrounding letting your child do things.

The media has a part to play and can be said to have responsible for much of the hysteria surrounding the dangers of being a child.  Perhaps though things are getting better.  The coverage of the recent sad case of a teenage girl who died on Dartmoor preparing for the Ten Tors Challenge seemed to maintain a focus on the positive nature of such trips.

It would seem also that the problem is not limited to the UK.  Danah Boyd on a recent drive through Austin, Texas was left wondering where all the people had gone.
