Business is Backgammon, not Chess

Yes! Running a business is not like Chess. There is a temptation to look a long way into the future and make detailed plans for achieving your ambition. But the reality is that it is more like Backgammon. Random events occur and the important thing is to have your pieces in the right place in the hope that the effect of bad luck is minimised and that when you have good luck you can take Read more…

The little detail that makes Science Slam great

It’s the little details that matter. I was speaking last week with some european colleagues. The conversation turned to FameLab. And ScienceSlam. And the similarities between them. Short talks, public vote vs judge-led decision. But the piece of genius from ScienceSlam is that it is NOT one person one vote, it is ONE TABLE ONE VOTE. That little detail turns the event from being out a talk and presentation into a discussion amongst the audience. Read more…

New member on board

Hi! I’m Angela, the exotic member of Gallomanor Communications. As exotic as paella can get. I studied Pharmacy knowing that I would end up in a lab. I finally put on my white coat at the Spanish National Centre for Cancer Research, where I completed my PhD. During this time I realised that with the narrow focus on a particular protein it is all too easy to forget to share my passion for science with Read more…

Supporting Software as a Service

We’ve been using KashFlow.com for our company accounts for a few years now. It’s an online service for which we pay about £20 a month. Prior to KashFlow we used Sage. KashFlow was a welcome breath of fresh air after Sage’s repeated attempts to get you to upgrade every year. Suddenly we were being offered a system that promised to continually improve. It wasn’t entirely plain sailing, but as Software as a Service (SaaS) you Read more…

Seat Filled: Josh Doyle

Hello. My name is Josh and today is my first day at Gallomanor; at least, my first day as an actual, real person and not a photograph sat on a chair. The first job I’ve been given—well, the first one which doesn’t involve flailing wildly in a sea of information—is to officially introduce myself, and perhaps later, change my Twitter bio accordingly. I’m told that I impressed with my “writing skills, organisational ability, and digital Read more…

Fill this seat

Hannah is moving on and we need to fill her seat. Do you want to help run the best science engagement project in the world?* We’re looking for someone to join the Gallomanor team full-time at our lovely office in the centre of Bath. You’d be working on I’m a Scientist and I’m an Engineer primarily, but also providing general support. The job involves helping to recruit and support scientists and schools (not difficult as Read more…

Half baked 419 scam

419 scam emails have been around for a while now. You know the ones. “I’m the bank manager for the ex-president of so-and-so and I want to share $40MILLION DOLLARS with you”. I had one when I tried selling my sisters car (with her permission of course). It came from Robin based in “Amsterdam” whose driver would come with a banker’s draft. I called him, but the rain on the corrogated iron roof at his Read more…

New member of the team…

Hi, I’m Hannah and I’ve just joined the Gallomanor team. I’ll be helping to organise the ‘I’m a Scientist’ and ‘I’m an Engineer’ events, starting with those coming up very soon in March. I’m looking forward to being one of the live chat moderators to really see how it all works and what all the excitement’s about! I graduated with a biology degree last year so I love learning about science and I’m keen to Read more…

WANTED: Project Wrangler

Autumnal flu, facial hair and Ireland!

Now that Autumn is in full swing, we thought it time for a little Gallomanor update. The office has fully recovered from the summer holiday productivity lull and we’ve been hard at work evaluating previous projects and planning new ones. To make sure we and others can learn from previous events Rosie’s had the unenviable task of evaluating I’m a Engineer, I’m a Scientist, Drugs in Sport Debate Kit and is about to finish the Read more…
